Prof. Dr. Abbas Poya

Abbas Poya is the Heisenberg Professor of Reform Discourses in Contemporary Islam at the Department of Islamic-Religious Studies (DIRS) at Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nurnberg (FAU) since August 2022.

Poya is interested in how innovative intellectual action in general and creative religious thinking in particular emerge in crises (be it a socio-political, cultural, economic or intellectual crisis). He deals with various religious-intellectual discourses in contemporary Islam with special attention on Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan. In research and teaching, he focuses especially on topics such as religious theology, law, Human Rights debate, tolerance, (de-)sacralization and religious-political movements in today’s Islam. Above all, it is important to him to show the dynamics, interconnection and hybridity of these issues.

Before taking on the professorship, Poya was head of the junior research group Norm, Normativity and Norm Change at FAU and taught at the Universities of Hamburg, Freiburg im Breisgau and Zurich. He was also a Fellow at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) and International Consultant to Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on Human Rights and Islam in Afghanistan.
